Up-and-back, down-and-out
From 12-5-0 Basic Motion Curriculum:

Quote:
Use a slow, smooth motion up-and-back, down-and-out and up-and-in the same distance in both directions and as continuously as possible
In this quote, HK does not mention IN for the Backstroke, and he does not mention FORWARD for the Downstroke. Why not? How can there be OUT on the Downstroke without IN on the Backstroke?

BASIC MOTION CURRICULUM
Non-Technical - Simplified

12-5-0 BASIC REQUIREMENTS

Use a slow, smooth motion up-and-back, down-and-out and up-and-in the same distance in both directions and as continuously as possible.

Make no adjustments during the Stroke, for – or because of – Impact. NEVER EVER. That is “Hacking at the Ball” and produces only “Hackers.”

Attach the items listed in the Three Stages, in sequence, without unnecessarily interrupting the Motion. Carefully develop the Address Routine (3-F-5).

Execute the items, single or in short series, first without a Ball and then with a Ball. Comply with 3-B, 5-0 and 12-3 – including The Triad.

Observe the special instructions at the head of each Stage list.

Where applicable, interpret the items per the basic Stroke Pattern, that is, Hitting or Swinging. Either 12-1 OR 12-2 – not both at the same time.

The Strong Single Action Grip (10-2-B) is mandatory throughout.

A lesson begins where the last one left off.

Asterisks in list indicate items for an abbreviated version.

This Curriculum can stand alone for many students but may also serve as preparation for a Basic Certificate course. But most importantly, MUST be used in conjunction with all other G.O.L.F. curriculum's.

WARNING:

HK is not claiming that you should use a "Pendulum" Stroke.

"as continuously as possible."

The 90 degree "Wedge" alignment is lost at Full Extension so while swinging back to the end of your backstroke, they need to be re-established before the stroke reaches its end. That's why he says "as continuously as possible." Not continuous like a Pendulum, but continuous like a G.O.L.F. Swing.

Purpose

In a normal Golf Stroke, the Wedges are set at 90 degrees at Impact Fix, then relaxed during "Standard Address". Then, the Swing re-captures this 90 degree setting at the end of "Start-up" if one uses the "Right Forearm Take-away".

In the Motion Curriculum's, especially "Basic Motion", you must conscientiously re-establish this Alignment again before the Downstroke begins and then during each "Continuous Motion". Doing so, will force you to convert "Mechanics - into - Feel". Then you can use this "Feel" while playing Golf.

This is not a simple exercise. You cannot learn this on your own. You need an instructor to show you the 90 degree Wedge Alignment and how simple Extensor Action can re-establish them from Standard Address during the Take-Away. The Right Forearm is ALWAYS DRIVING.

Once this is learned, then you can Practice and experience continuous Improvement.
