"Control the Clubface and you control the Ball. Control the Ball and you control the Game" _ Yoda.
All of The Golfing Machine is useful, but if you never learned anything more than Hinge Action (clubface control), I believe you can become a very good player.
I do a 3-Ball Drill that I believe will teach you everything you need to know about Hinge Action and give you a good command of your short game in the process. Full credit for this drill goes to Lynn as it was inspired by a demonstration he performed at the "Comeback School" in St. Augustine.
This drill uses a small swing that ends at Follow-Through (both arms straight). For me, the sole of the club only gets about 9" off the ground in both directions. Power is not an issue - the ball only flies 2 - 4 yards.
Be purposeful. All steps of this drill require 100% intention and attention.
Here's how I do it:
1. Plan. Say to yourself "horizontal hinging". Both words are important. All shots - practice or playing - require a decision as to what hinge action is to be used before you take your grip.
2. Rehearse. Take a practice swing using horizontal hinging (leading edge parallel to the Plane Line at the Follow-Through position). If you need to rehearse more than once, do so. You must be satisfied that you have correctly rehearsed the planned Hinge Action.
3. Execute. Stroke the ball using the previously rehearsed swing. Be sure to hold the Follow-Through position.
4. Evaluate. While still in the Follow-Through position, look at the leading edge and evaluate its position. If it isn't correct, take a couple of correct rehearsal swings, but do not NOT hit another horizontal hinge shot. Proceed to Step 5.
5. Repeat steps 1 -4 for Angled and Vertical Hinging.
Completing steps 1 - 5 is one "set".
If you have trouble understanding or executing hinge action, try doing 10 sets of the 3-Ball Hinge Drill three times a week for just two months. Do it with 100% intention and attention and you will be amazed at the improvement in your ball control.
