Pivot controlled hands vs Hands controlled pivot.....
I see this topic come up quite often and was hoping one of the resident guru's could lift some fog pertaining to the benefits and drawbacks to both styles, if any. From prior Yoda posts i would suspect that pivot controlled hands in swinging can lead to a double shift in the plane for one. Are there simply more compensations with the pivot controlled hands?

Since there are two 'connections' our body has to provide leverage, there are simply two areas to focus 'feel'

in the feet (pivot control)
in the hands (hands control)

at root these represent the 'ends of the lever' which we have control over. IMO pivot control, in an 'ideal' application would be the ultimate machine, however to surrender to the motion to the degree required, without the ability to 'adjust' that the hands have, makes this much more difficult to do. You must have a pure swinging motion and perfect balance.

The hands offer the advantage, because they are farther along the 'chain', and thus the mind, which is amazing at adjustments if allowed, can recover from less than ideal swings before impact.

Personally, I think that the feel should be developed in both with the goal of balance between them, however for the reasons above, there will always be an advantage to hands control.

The Homunculus Concept is that of a human figure whose body parts are distorted in direct proportion to the amount of brain power devoted to their respective functions. View such a figure at:

In the presence of "Lag", the pivot will react/respond to or support the action of the hands, either pulling or pushing AGAINST that "Lag".

In other worlds, all you need to focus (or your intention) is the way (where and how fast) you would like that "Lag" to be moved by the hands. The pivot movement is simply the reaction, response or "effect" to (or "CONTROLLED" by) the hands (the "cause").

Not sure about "pivot-controlled hands" for "hitting", you can certainly do the other way around (or whatever) for "swinging" and let the movement of the hands (and club) to be dictated (thrown or pulled) by the body action, as long as the result is fine.

YOU load and sustain the "LAG", during which the "LAW" releases it, ideally beyond impact.
"Sustain (Yang/陽) the lag (Yin/陰)" is "the unification of Ying and Yang" (陰陽合一).
The "LAW" creates the "effect", which is the "motion" or "feel", with the "cause", which is the "intent" or "command".
"Lag" is the secret of golf, passion is the secret of life.
Think as a golfer, execute like a robot.
Rotate, twist, spin, turn.
Bend the shaft.

Any Lifeguard who has worked the North Atlantic can tell you how profoundly our brain favors our hands. Tourists that walk into cold ocean water will all perform the exact same physical behavior to tacitly protect their hands. The reaction is across all ages and genders of the species. It is not learned or taught.

Trust your hands, your brain and genetics value them highly.

Useless info for today

Thanks guys! There is one part of the figure many might argue about Yoda but i very much do get your point for sure. You are a very wise man, and not just on golf matters.

Could you elaborate a bit more on that profound behaviour Theo? Sounds most interesting

They raise their arms and hands to shoulder high and above, while they wade into the water. They will continue to armpit deep holding that position. When their brain finally tells them they are not in mortal danger, their deep breathing stops and they lower their hands.
