Bunker Shot Double Wristcock
 

Tom Tomesallo has a 1989 video (I believe taken in Australia) that shows him describing & executing the use of Double Wristcock application for his Greenside Bunker Shots. Has anybody seen the video and does anybody employ the DWC sandshots? Through Impact, would a Flat Left Wrist condition exist?

Left hand turned excessively (10-2-D ish); rt.hand "under" to match; clubhead pushed past the hands as far as possible with the above wrist conditions while maintaining a square leading edge. Picture a wine glass sitting on the face without ever tilting left or right through impact and follow through. Rt. shoulder stays high; circle delivery path. Inward hand path on backswing; over release with vertical hinging. Note: Crazy loose left little finger; seek a flat-bent right wrist from address to finish; THROW clubhead under the ball. Once mastered, the closer entrance to the sand is to the ball, the greater the stopping power! Closed stance works BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!

Awesome procedure thanks EC. Intentional throwaway or one version of it. I dont have a 10-2 - D for normal shots but goof around with a procedure similar to what you describe for lob shots , sand shots when practicing. Might have to adopt it , Man it works. Cant wait to try it while "playing the flute" with my left hand and a closed stance. BTW why the closed stance?

In regard to double wrist cock from the sand/ lob shots .... Tiger talks about it in his book if memory serves. Might be wrong. Its popular on tour for sure. It exposes the bounce even more than the open face , open plane or so it feels to me. Therefor id say that it has to be present at impact in some form. If it wasnt the ball wouldnt know the difference, logically.

Thing about the flat left wrist is it can be broken for a reason , to produce the impact dynamics necessary for a high soft shot say . You have options but just saying that a lot of guys on tour hit a lob with a breaking left wrist. A driver shot however .... no. Flat left equals compression . If you dont want compression .... the flat left may become less flat . Homer IMO would be ok with this . Imagine a Pause Minor Basic Stroke with Vertical Hinging .... that sucker is gonna break no? Also called the "tour flop" , intentional throwaway if you will. Never did get TGM guys who thought you had keep the left hand flat as a pancake everywhere in the swing and for all shots . I have issues with both. I personally dont think thats what Homer was talking about. That would take some time to discuss however.

In regard to flops I had the good fortune to be watching the play at the 2010 Open with Yoda during Saturdays round. We witnessed the young kid all decked out in orange hit a super flop over the road hole bunker to a tight pin.. He pulled off an amazing shot that the gallery around us justifiably applauded. "Intentional throwaway" whispered Yoda. He just flung that clubhead past his hands with a vertical hinge , well to my eyes anyways . Think of it as a masters level of execution in the education of ones hands.

When playing a Green-side Bunker shot, the sand extends the Impact Interval. Clubface Misalignment has some serious consequences.

1. The Sand pushes on the Cover of the Ball.
2. The Sand slows the Clubhead.

i would stay away from anything other than an open face and angled hinge. why would you make it any harder than it already is.

Thats where I netted out on things. Intentional throwaway can be mastered by some but I personally get better , more consistent results with a flat left wrist and cut shot , angled or vertical hinging .... talking lobs and high soft sand shots . Sweep release helps. Thats just me though after a few years of experimentation with throwaway as a weapon.
