Forget about 'right upper arm away from the upper chest.' This is 'Position Golf' without Alignments and is almost worthless. In Start Up (8-4) concentrate on 'Pointing at the Plane Line' (2-F and 7-5) with the Right Forearm and the #3 Pressure Point. Go through the Basic Motion Curriculums of 12-5-1 and 12-5-2. First the Right Elbow Bends and then the Right Elbow Fans. And always with Extensor Action.

So the book says to have a straight line punch, but not a straight line punch.

The Fanning of the Right Forearm occurs during Start Up for both Punch and Pitch Basic Strokes. There is no Fanning with Push Basic. The Straight Line Punch you refer to is through the Ball. Here, the Right Elbow -- Active for Hitters and Passive for Swingers -- straightens the Right Arm and causes the Clubhead to Overtake the Hands via the Roll of the #3 Accumulator, i.e., the Left Arm and Clubshaft Angle (6-B-3-0), through the Impact Interval to the end of the Follow-Through (8-11).

Per one of my earliest posts, we are not talking about a 'true' Rotation of the Forearm wherein the the player physically attempts to 'cause' the Forearm to rotate. Instead, he simply allows the Forearm to Rotate in its natural manner. It is the natural Motion induced on the Backstroke by the Rotation of the Body and the swinging of the Arms. It is the identical motion you make when you clap your hands. When was the last time you tried to 'rotate' your forearms when you clapped your hands?

So, In other words...listen carefully now:

During Start Up, the The Right Forearm Fans, but it is not 'Fanned.' Through Impact, it Drives (Hitting) or is Driven (Swinging).

Clap your Hands, and watch your forearms.

That is ALL you need to know about Fanning.

Trust me...

Some things really are simple...

And Fanning -- Clapping -- is one of them!
